In my last role, I worked on a [Type of App, e.g., E-commerce or Healthcare] application. We worked in an Agile-Scrum environment with a team of 5 Developers and 2 QA Engineers.

Our total test bank consisted of about 600 test cases. Because we were moving fast with 2-week sprints, we automated the most critical 200 cases using [Tool, e.g., Selenium/Java] to handle our Regression Suite. This allowed us to focus our manual efforts—usually 10 to 15 cases per day—on testing new features and complex edge cases.

Note:

  • I maintained a suite of 200 automation scripts and added 5–10 new ones per sprint as features stabilized.
  • We maintained a ratio of approximately 3–4 developers per 1 QA

Interview Q&A – Test Strategy & Automation

  • How did you decide which of those 200 cases to automate? We used a Risk-Based approach. We prioritized high-traffic areas (such as Login, Checkout, or Search) and focused on Happy Path scenarios that were stable and unlikely to change frequently.

  • With only 2 QAs, how did you manage 600 test cases? We didn’t run all 600 test cases every day. Instead, we used Test Suite Categorization:

    • Smoke Suite (20 cases): Executed on every build (Automated)
    • Sanity Suite (50 cases): Executed on major feature changes (Manual/Automated)
    • Regression Suite (200 cases): Executed before each release (Automated)
    • Full Test Library: Executed only during major version upgrades
  • What was your bug-to-developer ratio? It varied by sprint, but on average we logged 15–20 bugs per sprint. Most were minor UI or usability issues, while 2–3 were High or Blocker severity, typically identified during automated regression runs.

  • Automation does NOT replace manual testing.
  • It helps scale repetitive testing once the application is stable.
  • ⚠️ If features/UI change frequently → scripts break → high maintenance.
  • Golden Rule (Rule of Three):
    If a test is repeated 3+ times → automate it.
  • When NOT to Automate: Avoid automation for:
    • UX/UI look & feel testing (needs human judgment)
    • Exploratory testing (“What happens if I click here?”)
    • One-time or short-term features

    • Regression Testing (Most Common): Re-check old features after every change.
    • High-Volume Data Testing: Test hundreds of inputs: forms, profiles, zip codes, validations.
    • Load / Performance Testing: Simulate thousands of users (humans cannot do this manually).
    • Smoke / Sanity Testing: Quick build verification: “System is up and running.”
